David A. Strand, MD, FACS
Credentials
Dr. David Strand is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Strand graduated first in his class from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry from St. Olaf College, and a Master's degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of North Dakota. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from both schools. Dr. Strand completed his General Surgery Residency at the prestigious Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Special Interests
Dr. Strand has special interest in all areas of minimally invasive general surgery including Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS).
His interests include:
- Gastrointestinal surgery
- Endoscopy
- General thoracic surgery
- Hernia repair
- Trauma and critical care
Treatment of breast disease including:
- Stereotactic breast biopsy
Endocrine surgery including:
- That of the thyroid and parathyroid
- Sclerotherapy for varicose veins
Surgical oncology including:
- Sentinel lymph node biopsies
Surgical weight loss procedures including:
- Gastric bypass
- Gastric band
- Sleeve gastrectomy procedures
Non-surgical weight loss options including:
- ORBERA intragastric balloon
Professional Memberships
Dr. Strand is an active member of the South Dakota State Medical Association (SDSMA), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Society of General Surgeons (ASGS), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), the Seventh District Medical Society, and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Strand is also a member of the Avera Health Plans Regional Care Council. He has served as the South Dakota Chairman of the Committee on Trauma for the American College of Surgeons and on the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority Board. In addition, he has served in many roles at Avera McKennan Hospital including Chief of Staff, Vice Chief of Staff, and Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
Teaching Experience
Dr. Strand holds an academic appointment from the University of South Dakota as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery and is active in the education of medical students and residents. He is also an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor.
Family
Dr. Strand and his wife, Carlen, have two children. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting, classic cars, and spending time with his family.
